The variations on challah recipes are endless. This comes from my daughter’s friends, the Mirmans. She ate it there last Shabbos and begged me NOT to get the recipe because she’ll eat too much! This recipe only makes 2 challahs but it can be doubled or tripled.
4 teaspoons yeast
1 cup warm water
½ cup sugar
½ cup oil
1 teaspoon salt
4 cups bread flour
Proof yeast in water. Add sugar. When yeast is bubbly, whisky in oil, eggs and salt. Slowly stir in bread flour and knead until smooth and elastic. Drizzle oil in bowl and roll dough in oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let the dough rise for 2 hours. Punch down dough, divide in half and then divide each half into number of braids desired. Braid challah and place on greased baking sheets or in greased loaf or challah pans. (To purchase great challah pans, please go to: http://gourmetkoshercooking.theopenskyproject.com/non-stick-challah-pan.html) Cover again and let rise for 1 hour. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake for about 30 minutes until crust is golden and challah sounds hollow when tapped.
I AM SHIRA TROPPERS BUBBIE AND I LIVE IN ERETZ YISROEL AND I LOVE YOUR RECIPIES. I WOULD LOVE ONE FOR RAINBOW COOKIES.
Thanks so much. We have a recipe for rainbow marzipan bars and one for sprinkle cookies. You can search for them by name or through the index. Hopefully one of those is what you’re looking for! Shira and Shevi sure spend a lot of time on the phone…
I really love this recipe! It is easy to make and very yummy! I love every recipe I have tried on this website. Thanks for making kosher a little easier!
I’ve always used this recipe, but I got it from my Bubie. It’s a really good recipe and you should try it if you haven’t, but I usually need 4 and a half to 5 cups of flour, so…
Would this recipe work in a bread machine?
It should work fine.
Do yourecommend using vegetable oil or using Canola Oil in this Challah? Thanks
Either works fine.
I’ve tried a lot of recipes in the past, but I must say this one is the best!
Thanks for sharing 🙂
I use this recepie every week but next time i will use just half the amount of yeast. I think it is a lot to have 1 teaspoon for each cup of flower.
I forgot to say that everyone says it is the best challah. So, thank you for the recepie also.
